Video Game Benefit

Video games are widespread all over the world and is a means of entertainment for everyone. Ever since the pong came out, video games expanded to new heights and got addictive to people. This addiction makes a person spend more time playing games rather than time outside. This became my problem as a child. As I grow addicted to the Nintendo and play station games, I never went out of the house. After school, I'd sit down in front of the console and play games.

However, there are hidden benefits in playing video games after all. It trains a person to think faster even though they're in one spot. Their mind is usually quicker than others although their reflex is not.

A research was conducted on two groups of male aged 18 to 25 years old. All of them aren't regular gamers. Both groups we're given 50 hours of playtime. The first group was given fast paced games like call of duty two and unreal tournament. The second group played slow paced games.

After the 50 hour play time, both groups were given auditory and visual information test. The researchers wanted to know if the fast paced gamers have a difference with slow paced gamers.

It turns out that the first group has a 25% faster response than the second group. Both have accurate answers although the second group didn't have a fast response.

The probabilistic inference is trained with the fast action games.

Our brain gathers and crunches visual and auditory information up until it can decide whether or not this is a viable option. Then it makes a precise and accurate action. Gamers that play war games usually have a faster visual and hearing reaction with their environment. Their brain is trained to act faster than a normal person. It's a hidden training if you see it in another way.

I used to play counter strike with my classmates way back in high school. When I play basketball, I'd usually recognize defense situations and what to do. My hand-eye coordination back then was really fast because I'd play counter strike for at least five hours a day.

As you can see, there is something good in playing a video game. But it should never be a reason for a person to stay in front of one for a long period of time. A person should balance his mental and physical exercise as well.

Boxing Equipment for Fitness

Are you thinking of hanging a punching bag in your garage?

Are you about to buy focus mitts and boxing gloves to workout with a friend at home?

In their enthusiasm to be the next Rocky too many beginners buy the wrong boxing equipment. Sadly it ends up in that big pile of stuff to collected in the next community clean up.

So let's get started with three quick tips to choose the right boxing equipment so you can get fighting fit at home, in the gym or anywhere.

Tip 1 - Wrap your Hands

While a punching bag may not hit back, they have still bruised plenty of knuckles, wrists and hands. That's why you need to wrap up.

Boxing, even for fitness, is an impact sport. Punching bags are not as soft as they look, especially when you try to impress your friends by throwing that hero left hook, without gloves on. Ouch.

Partner mitt work can hurt too. Inexperienced partners holding the mitts (a.k.a focus pads) often "whack back" too hard or they hold the mitts in awkward positions, which can jar wrists and bruise knuckles.

Always use handwraps under your gloves. Handwraps are long cloth bandages. I prefer the elasticized type - which only cost around $10. They stabilize the joints, give a tighter fit and reduce friction. It's like a well-fitting pair of running shoes versus going for a jog in sandals.

Remember that cotton under gloves are not handwraps. Under gloves smell-proof your hands but don't offer much support.

Tip 2 - Choose the Right Gloves

In a nutshell, there are two types: Bag Gloves and Boxing Gloves.

Bag Gloves are smaller, with a soft, flexible place for your thumb. They are lighter and cheaper, but don't offer as much support as Boxing Gloves, which have a solid thumb and more padding.

Boxing Gloves come in different weights: I suggest 8oz, 10oz or 12oz for women and kids, and 12 oz, 14oz or 16 oz for men. Heavier gloves offer more padding, but are slower. I prefer a lightweight boxing glove to train in - 10oz or 12oz. If you have big hands you'll need a bigger glove.

MMA style fingerless gloves are another option, especially if you want to grapple, but don't offer as much protection for punching bag and partner mitt workouts.

Tip 3 - Choose your Target. Focus Mitts, Punching Bags and Speedbags

If you have a partner to train with, buy Focus Mitts. If you are training by yourself get a Punching Bag. A third option is to Shadow Box, where you just punch air. Not a bad workout, but it's more fun to hit something!

Things to Consider for Focus Mitts:

Go for light weight - you don't want to be holding bricks. Also not too hard. Some are like concrete. They should be snug without being too tight. If you are swapping with a partner, make sure you can get them on and off quickly and easily, especially with handwraps on.

Things to Consider for Punching Bags:

Choose a Punching Bag that is about half your body weight. Hanging bags are usually cheaper than free standing, but involve some handy work to install. Make sure it's not rock hard. Have plenty of space, so you can move around.

What about Speedbag / Speedball? (think Million Dollar Baby)

These are mainly for reflexes and hand speed. It's only when you get good, that speedbags can give you a sweat. You don't get to really sink your punches in or practice your combos, and it's quite a bit of work to set up a platform for it.

May you Get Fighting Fit!

What To Do Before Buying Weight Lifting Equipment

When choosing weight lifting equipment there are numerous factors to consider. The first is your budget as this will affect what you will be able to purchase. The next is the physical space you have available in your home. You may be lucky to have a spare room to store the equipment but if not you should carefully plan where you intend to put it.

If you are new to weight lifting and want a varied workout then you may be best starting off with dumbbells. Instructors often recommend these for beginners as you can do various workout routines without any storage problems. They are also relatively cheaper than other weights.

Machines such as the hack squat machine and the Smith machine were developed especially for this kind of exercise. This was said to be invented by the famous American fitness self improvement guru Jack LaLanne and then developed by Ruddy Smith, a manager of a fitness studio in Los Angeles.

Smith machines are recommended for the variety of workouts you can do on them, coupled with the fact they are relatively safe to use. They can be used for both upper and lower body workouts. It is important to check the kind of weight used with the machine as it is vital not to strain yourself.

Barbells can be used on a fixed machine or as a standalone item of equipment. It is important to be careful when using them and never add too many weights. It is better to underestimate your strength than overestimate!

If you are worried about causing injury to yourself when lifting weights there are a number of accessories that can help you. Wearing gloves will help you avoid getting blisters on your hands, while a belt can help support your body while lifting and reducing the risk of injury. However it is important to apply these things properly or you are more likely to cause yourself harm in the long term.

When choosing weight lifting equipment it is vital to be realistic. While you want to challenge yourself, overburdening yourself physically will cause injury and do more harm than good. If you are unsure how to use weight lifting equipment you should look online to see physical demonstration of each exercise. If you are still in any doubt, contact a local fitness instructor for more information.
